The Richmond Way begins at Lancaster Castle and is a 60 mile walk through the stunning scenery of Lune Valley, the moors and fells of the central Pennines and the Yorkshire Dales, ending at the stunning North Yorkshire town of Richmond in Swaledale.

The Richmond Way walking trail was devised by John Coppack and is combination of public footpaths , ancient tracks and quiet country lanes, making a walking route that is easy to follow.

On the Richmond Way walking holiday from Lancaster Castle
you follow the River Lune upstream to Hornby and then the River Greta
to the North Yorkshire town of Ingleton. From Ingleton you will see waterfalls and glens as the walking trail enters Limestone Country with stunning moors and hills.
The famous Ribblehead viaduct is a highlight of this section. The walking tail then enters The Yorkshire Dales National Park and the famous dales of Raydale and Wensleydale, the largest of all the dales. The little Yorkshire town of Askrigg is a must
for all fans of the James Herriot TV series. The final section of the walk follows the River Swale to Richmond ending at the historic Richmond Castle gates.

This is a new walking tour of Lancashire and the Yorkshire Dales, so we have carefully selected comfortable accommodation to ensure you are well rested each night after a busy day hiking and sightseeing.
Lancaster Castle on Richmond Way walking holiday in Lancashire and Yorkshire Day 1: Arrive Lancaster
To start your walking holiday in the Richmond Way you arrive at the historic town of Lancaster. Lancaster has a fine cathedral and a fine castle dating back to Norman times and some fine Georgian buildings.
Day 2: Lancaster to Hornby                                10 miles
The Richmond Way leaves Lancaster following the River Lune upstream under the fine Rennie's Aqueduct to Halton. From Halton the walking trail continues along the River Lune to Crook o' Lune. Then via higher ground and through riverside pastures to Hornby. Hornby makes a good overnight stop with its castle, historic buildings and fine inns.

Ingleton on Richmond Way walking holiday in Lancashire and Yorkshire Day 3: Hornby to Ingleton                                9 miles
Today you continue walking along the River Lune until nearly Melling. Hiking on from Melling the trail leaves the Lune valley. At the hamlet of Old Wennington the Richmond Way leaves Lancashire and enters North Yorkshire. Walking on to Burton-in-Lonsdale above the River Greta the trail follows the river to Ingleton.
Day 4: Ingleton to Ribblehead                                7 miles
Walking on from Ingleton the trail enters the valley of Chapel-le-Dale. The area is an old packhorse route and follows the rivers Twiss and Doe famous for waterfalls.
Further along the hiking trail enters an area of Limestone pavements before reaching moorland at Scales Moor under the shadow of Scar End. The trail continues to Ribblehead via Winterscales Beck. The overnight stop is at Ribblehead passing on the way the imposing structure of the Ribblehead Viaduct.

Day 5: Ribblehead to Bainbridge              14 miles
Today's walking leaves Ribblehead via Cam Fell offering fine view over the Yorkshire Dales. The Richmond Way shares the route with The Dales Way for a short section. The trail passes below Wether Fell before reaching the Ice Age Lake of Semer Water. From the lake the walking trail follows the River Bain to Bainbridge.

Day 6: Bainbridge to Grinton                             12.5 miles
The Richmond Way is now in the heart of The Yorkshire Dales made famous in the James Herriot's books and TV series about a Yorkshire vet. The pretty town of Askrigg was the setting for the TV series "All Creatures Great and Small", and the famous 19th century inn The King's Arms is better known to James Herriot's fans as The Drovers Arms. The area is steeped in history and walking trail passes old lead mines and prehistoric settlements. The hamlet of Castle Bolton has a 14th century castle. The walking trail enters Swaledale via Greets Hill to the town of Grinton.

Grinton Bridge on Richmond Way walking holiday in Lancashire and Yorkshire Day 7: Grinton to Richmond                                  9 miles
Continuing along the River Swale from Grinton your walk on the Richmond Way takes you through Swaledale via Marrick Priory and Applegarth Scar. The walking trail enters Richmond by crossing the River Swale over the famous 18th century bridge. Richmond, a highlight of North Yorkshire, is a famous market town which boasts fine shops, inns and a castle, which dates back to the 11th century, and marks the end of your walking tour.

Day 8: depart after breakfast       or spend some time exploring the area.
